In the US, the North Little Rock School District in Arkansas is suing a teenager who, it claims, was accidentally paid $12,755.62 after a payroll mix-up, KARK.com reports.
The complaint alleges that Adamaris Guereca (19) received the money through five payroll deposits from the school district between May 22 and June 23.
According to the suit, Ms Guereca is not employed or contracted by the district yet withdrew the deposits marked “NLR School Dist PAYROLL,” leaving her account with a negative balance shortly after the final deposit.
The account reportedly had a zero balance when the first deposit was received.
The complaint states that the district sent two letters (one registered and one not) to Ms Guereca on September 9 seeking repayment by September 23. The certified letter was returned to sender on September 30, and the standard mail letter was not returned.
In addition, the lawsuit contends that Ms Guereca is guilty of conversion and unjust enrichment by acting as the owner of the money, and of a felony, because the amount in question exceeds $1,000.
The school district now reportedly seeks a jury trial and the return of the money, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, attorney’s fees, and punitive damages.
