Amazon has announced it is increasing its minimum starting hourly wage for US full-time core operations employees before the holiday shopping season begins, AZ Family reports.

With this hike and the $1-per-hour increase across the board for workers in roles such as packing and shipping orders, the average hourly pay for these employees will reach nearly $24.

The online retail giant reportedly stated that average total compensation will be more than $32 an hour, including the value of its benefits package. The pay increase comes into force on September 27.

In addition, Amazon said employees will receive new benefits including a 10 per cent discount on eligible fresh groceries and everyday essentials at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online, plus 20 per cent off at Whole Foods physical stores. The discount can be combined with existing Prime member discounts, it said.

Every Amazon employee in the US will be entitled to the benefit from October 1.

In addition, Amazon stated that it is rolling out access to qualified employees and their families for a membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union, which provides low-cost banking services they can keep for life.

Employees may access accounts with no overdraft or monthly maintenance. The company added that no credit history is required to open a checking and savings account. The rollout will begin later this year.
