In the US, the Alabama Department of Finance is seeking to recoup $41,881.72 from state employees who received "erroneous salary payments" in August, 1819 News reports.
According to a Department of Finance spokesperson, the payments resulted from a "technical system error."
The error reportedly saw state employees scheduled to receive two paycheque deposits, with one deposit reversed back to the state for the August 1 pay date. State employees are paid on the 1st and 15th of each month. But some inaccurate salary payments couldn't be immediately reversed.
Speaking to 1819 News, Department of Finance spokesperson Ethan Girona said, "The State experienced a technical system error in the August 1, 2026, payroll calculation that resulted in some state employees receiving inaccurate salary payments for that pay period. The incorrect payments were immediately identified and reversed, and employees received their correct salary payments on time.
“However, 1,407 erroneous salary payments could not be immediately reversed. Through the diligent efforts of the State Comptroller's Office and agency payroll directors, the amount outstanding for collection has been reduced to $41,881.72, with ongoing efforts to complete the recoupment."
