In the UK, a payroll advisor who stole £25,000 from the retailer Poundland after being employed for less than a month has been sentenced, London999 reports.
Harminder Gill joined Poundland’s Walsall HQ as a payroll advisor on February 27, 2023. During the next 26 days, prosecutors say he defrauded the company of around £25,000 before the fraud was uncovered. His employment ended on March 24.
The offence was reportedly committed while Mr Gill was already under investigation for a separate fraud involving Euro Car Parts. Mr Gill stole around £350,000 while working in payroll for Euro Car Parts, and used the money for holidays, hotels and executive car hire.
The payroll advisor was jailed for four-and-a-half years in May 2023 after admitting fraud at Warwick Crown Court.
Poundland identified irregularities in its payroll system and assisted the subsequent investigation. Mr Gill later admitted offences relating to the £25,000 fraud against the discount chain.
He was given a suspended sentence. The court reportedly took into account the substantial prison term he had already served for the earlier Euro Car Parts fraud.
In addition, Mr Gill was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and warned that further offending could result in imprisonment. This case was a separate prosecution from Mr Gill’s prior £350,000 fraud.
