[Global] Twitter confirms its private Circle tweets were public
06 May 2023

Twitter Inc. has confirmed that a security error led Circle tweets on the platform - posts that are only intended to be seen by a subset of trusted followers - to be shown publicly, TechCrunch reports.

TechCrunch reported the glitch in early April and Twitter confirmed the issue on May 5 an email sent to Twitter Circle users.

“In April 2023, a security incident may have allowed users outside of your Twitter Circle to see tweets that should have otherwise been limited to the Circle to which you were posting,” the email said.

Twitter reportedly claims that the bug has been fixed and that the team knows its cause.

Twitter Circle suffered issues for months, a troubling situation for a feature that is designed to allow people to tweet things they don’t want to share with all of their followers.

Multiple users had been tweeting concerns that people outside of their Circle were liking their private tweets, when TechCrunch reported on the issue last month.

It reportedly appeared that Circle tweets were most frequently surfacing in the For You timeline to users who follow the poster but were not in their Circle. Other Twitter Circle users stated that their private tweets were reaching beyond those who follow them.
