[Thailand] Minimum wage rise to uplift 'grassroots' people affirmed by PM

In Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin affirmed his support for a rise in the national minimum wage, Pattaya Mail reports.

The Prime Minister spoke after the weekly cabinet meeting where it was announced that 76 chambers of commerce and 54 trade associations opposed the minimum wage hike.

From October 1, 2024, the country’s minimum wage is reportedly set to increase to 400 Baht.

According to the Prime Minister, the higher minimum wage is intended to help uplift the ‘grassroots’ people who have played a crucial part in driving Thailand’s economy forward. He expressed the importance of their livelihoods and wellbeing are very important. 

Over the past 10 years, the minimum wage has risen by a little over 10 per cent, putting it out of step with the cost of living. 

Minister of Labor Phipat Ratchakitprakarn was also commended for his role in advancing the minimum wage hike.
