In the Philippines, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has urged private sector employers to comply with the PHP50 daily wage increase for minimum wage earners in Metro Manila, which came into effect on July 18, Philippine News Agency reports.

DOLE’s National Capital Region (NCR) Director Sarah Buena Mirasol stated that she hoped employers would voluntarily implement Wage Order NCR-26, issued by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board on June 30.

In a July 19 phone interview, she said, “We are calling on all employers to apply the new minimum wage rate.”

The minimum wage hike is reportedly expected to benefit around 1.2 million minimum wage earners in the NCR. It marks the highest increase, to date, that the wage board has granted.

The daily minimum wage for the non-agriculture sector is now PHP695, rising from PHP645.

The minimum wage for workers in agriculture, service, and retail establishments with 15 or fewer employees and manufacturing firms with fewer than 10 workers has also risen. It went from PHP608 to PHP658.

Ms Mirasol also reportedly encouraged workers to report employers who fail to comply with the new rates.
