[New Zealand] Job ads fall to below pre-pandemic level
07 Dec 2023

In New Zealand, job ads fell by 6 per cent in October and by the end of November they were 1 per cent lower than October 2019 levels, SIA reports.

According to job board operator Seek, declines were seen in all regions except Taranaki, where volumes grew by 7 per cent.

New Zealand’s largest cities reportedly drove the decline in job ads. In Auckland, job ads fell by 4 per cent and Wellington recorded a 6 per cent decrease. Job ads in Canterbury fell by 6 per cent.

Applications per job ad, however, increased by 4 per cent after falling the previous month and are now nearing peak levels.

In a press release, Rob Clark - Seek New Zealand country manager - said, “A rebound in applications per job ad levels, after a drop the month prior, discounts the idea that candidate interest is plateauing”. “Application levels are again close to a record high, which demonstrates the desire for many workers to make a move ahead of Christmas.”

This should mean greater choice of candidates for hiring companies, Mr Clark said.

Exploring the data by industry, the overall decline in job ads in October was apparently driven by manufacturing, transport and logistics, down 7 per cent; administration and office support, down 8 per cent; and trades and services, down 6 per cent.

Some industries avoided the decline trend. In real estate and property, job ads reportedly rose by 23 per cent while education and training saw job ads rise by 11 per cent.
