[Jakarta] Minimum wage increase for some businesses
16 Nov 2020

Indonesia’s capital Jakarta is set to increase minimum wages for select businesses in 2021 despite a government circular advising against changing pay rates to avoid further job losses during the COVID-19 crisis. According to Governor Anies Baswedan, Jakarta’s monthly minimum wage will rise by 3.27 per cent to 4.42 million rupiah (9,400 baht) in 2021 for workers in businesses less impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The increase is contingent upon businesses being able to operate as usual and help support economic growth in the city, the governor said in his October 31 statement. Businesses which have been more seriously impacted by COVID-19 can reportedly submit a request to the local manpower agency to have the increase waived. Jakarta joins Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces in increasing wages against the government circular’s guidance to maintain pay at current levels. Bangkok Post has more on the story.
