A prominent Indian politician told an audience of officials and dignitaries in New York that, even if the people of India leave their motherland for jobs, expatriate Indians are standing by the country’s development, INDToday reports.
G Kishan Reddy - union tourism minister and Telangana BJP chief - was speaking at a meeting organized by the Consul General of India in New York. He said that along with the national youth, the role played by diaspora Indians is very important in the process of India growing as the world’s pharmaceutical capital and factory of the world.
The minister said that although the entire world is caught in the impact of economic recession, India is moving forward with steady development. He reportedly attributed the reason for this to the policies followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
Kishan Reddy said that India - the fifth largest economy in the world - receives foreign investments of 3 billion dollars every year.
Foreign exchange reserves have now crossed 600 billion dollars, according to the minister and he stated that the world’s largest startup ecosystem has been established in the country.
Reddy said that India is moving forward with the aim of making this decade a “Tech Decade” by giving production-based incentives in 14 key sectors. He called upon every expatriate Indian to encourage at least five non-Indian friends to visit their country.
They should be encouraged to invest the minister said. Over the next 25 years, the diaspora should be a part of making the country a global leader.
Kishan Reddy reportedly recounted the occasion when he toured the US with today’s Prime Minster Modi as a young politician in 1994 and recalled standing in front of the White House and taking a photo.
Consul General of India in New York Randhir Jaiswal, Deputy Consul Varun Jeff, DG Tourism of India Manisha and other officials participated in the programme.
