The BBC has sought help from the consulting industry for support in transforming its internal operations, selecting India’s Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) as a strategic partner, Consultancy.uk reports.
TCS will help the national broadcaster update its finance, accounting and payroll functions in the multi-year deal.
“We are pleased to be selected by the BBC as their partner to transform their finance and payroll function. TCS’ digital capabilities and domain expertise will help them achieve their business objectives while building greater agility and resilience in their operations,” Amit Kapur - TCS Country Head, UK and Ireland - said. “This partnership will strengthen TCS' position as a leader in delivering transformative business services to the media and entertainment industry.”
The BBC has reportedly worked with a range of professional services firms over recent years as part of moves to reinforce its service as the UK’s state broadcaster. Croner previously consulted to help the BBC close its gender pay gap and Bain & Company supported the broadcaster with a strategic review as it prepared for job cuts in 2022.
PwC was recently commissioned to explore the BBC’s broader social impact and revealed that it contributes as much as 11 per cent of the total creative employment in some areas of Britain.
Now TCS has become the latest advisory firm to help the BBC. The IT services and consulting organisation has partnered with many of the world’s largest businesses – including Jaguar Land Rover and JetBlue – for their transformation journeys.
TCS’ multi-year partnership with the BBC will reportedly see it leverage its contextual knowledge, proprietary platforms, partner ecosystem and future-ready talent pool to power the broadcaster’s media business model reimagination and drive growth.
The partnership will involve the management of individual processes across both strategic and transactional finance operations, embedding digital technologies in them to improve efficiency, process velocity and process outcomes. In addition, TCS will provide application management and change delivery services for the broadcaster’s application estate supporting the finance, procurement and HR functions.
The announcement comes amid the BBC’s ongoing search for efficiency savings; the broadcaster’s future and funding are currently looking uncertain. In 2022, Director General Tim Davie announced that 1,000 jobs would be cut across the public-funded part of the corporation. This was reportedly followed, in March 2023, by the news that the corporation would cut back on 1,000 hours of new television programming in a further bid to save money.
In 2022 the BBC made around 12,500 "originated hours".
