The story of a Chinese flight attendant fired for her age has gone viral on social media after the woman learned a number of new languages and gained multiple job offers from foreign airlines, Newsroom Post reports.

The flight attendant known by her surname ‘Hu’ was fired from a Chinese airline after they determined her to be ”too old” to work. Hu (50) worked for Norwegian Air Shuttle.

She worked with the airline for the past 6 years before being fired during an ‘internal restructuring’. After losing her job, she started looking for jobs with foreign airlines. She did not look for jobs with Chinese airlines because they don’t employ women aged 40 plus.

Hu started learning multiple new languages, including English and Finnish, while she sought work. She went on to secure several job offers from three overseas airlines that did not have an age limit.

Her motivational story has gone viral on the Internet with Chinese netizens praising her for her dedication. In China, the age limit to retire from physically intensive work for women is 50 years. The retirement age for men is 55, under China’s labour law.

In a video that has gone viral on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Ms Hu explained how she is able to handle such a physically demanding job. She said that daily exercise and a healthy diet are the reasons she is able to manage long flying hours at her age.

Chinese social media users are calling her an inspiration. Some there have termed her a ”Role Model" for women as she begins a new start in her career.
