[Bangladesh] Gazette of RMG wages published amid protests

On November 11, Bangladesh’s Minimum Wages Board published its draft proposal, recommending Tk 12,500 as the minimum monthly wage for ready-made garment (RMG) workers, New Age Business reports.

The Board published the proposal in a gazette notification, seeking any written objections or suggestions on the recommendation of stakeholders within 14 days.

The Minimum Wages Board on the RMG sector reportedly finalised the amount at its 6th meeting on November 7 amid protests from workers, who were demanding Tk 23,000 as the minimum monthly pay.

The minimum wage for RMG workers was last set in 2018.

In the new wage structure, the Minimum Wages Board proposed five grades for workers instead of the existing seven grades.

Under the proposal, grade five would be the lowest grade for the RMG workers. The board proposed Tk 12,500 as the minimum monthly gross pay for this grade which includes Tk 6,700 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 750 as medical allowance, Tk 450 as travel allowance and Tk 1250 as food allowance.

For grade four workers, the minimum monthly wage has been proposed at Tk 13,025 as a gross wage which includes Tk 7,050 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 750 as medical allowance, Tk 450 as travel allowance and Tk 1250 as food allowance.

For grade three workers, the minimum monthly wage has been proposed at Tk 13,550 as a gross wage which includes Tk 7,400 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 750 as medical allowance, Tk 450 as travel allowance and Tk 1250 as food allowance.

For grade-two workers, the minimum monthly wage has been proposed at Tk 14,150 as a gross wage which includes Tk 7,800 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 750 as medical allowance, Tk 450 as travel allowance and Tk 1,250 as food allowance.

For grade-one workers, the minimum monthly wage has been proposed at Tk 14,750 as a gross wage which includes Tk 8,200 as basic pay, 50 per cent of the basic pay as house rent, Tk 750 as medical allowance, Tk 450 as travel allowance and Tk 1,250 as food allowance.

The wage board proposed Tk 9,875 as the monthly gross pay for apprentice workers, with a provision for a six-month apprenticeship.

In addition, the board reportedly proposed to incorporate the provision for a 5 per cent yearly increment in the basic pay of RMG workers.
