[Bangladesh] Factories urged to settle unpaid March salaries before Eid

According to industrial police, by April 7 around 70 per cent of the factories in Bangladesh had yet to pay workers’ March salaries, The Daily Star reports.

Seventy per cent of these production units had, however, already paid workers their festival bonus.

By the same date, around 99 per cent of the nearly 9,500 industrial units and factories under eight industrial zones in the country had paid salaries for February.

Industrial units and factory owners were reportedly expected to pay the workers within the two days before the beginning of the Eid holidays. The affected industrial zones are in Ashulia, Savar, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Cumilla, Chattogram, Khulna, Sylhet and Narsingdi.

On March 27, Nazrul Islam Chowdhury - State Minister for Labour and Employment - urged industry owners to make workers' salaries and festival bonus payments before the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays began.

The state minister made the public statement following a meeting with National Tripartite Consultative Council representatives at the labour ministry. No specific payment date was fixed.

Mr Chowdhury also reportedly announced that workers' Eid holidays will be equal to and not shorter than the government-declared holidays, adding that no worker can be terminated or laid off before Eid.
