[Australia] No takers for $150k mining industry jobs with no experience necessary

Australia’s mining industry is facing a desperate shortage of workers and, in a bid to attract new employees, mines are offering good wages with no experience necessary. Yet still they are struggling to fill vacancies, The U.S. Sun reports.

More than 50 positions are currently open in Queensland's Bowen Basin as its local coal mines fight to maintain their output. Some mines offer bonuses of up to £36,000 to make the deal more attractive but still cannot attract sufficient applicants.

Entry-level positions such as trainee drivers reportedly come in at the lower end of the salary scale. However, these offer accommodation subsidies and up to six weeks of annual leave.

But the work can involve some challenging shifts, with night shifts and early starts both appearing on the schedule rota.

Applicants with some trade certifications could make a reasonable wage with posts for auto electricians currently offering a salary of between $147,000 and $150,000.

The role reportedly requires a trade certification, C-class driving licence and significant experience with heavy machinery, however, the experience need not be in mining.

Jobs are available across several areas in the Basin, including Blackwater, Toowoomba and Biloela.

This latest sweetening of mining vacancies follows Mineral Resources - a mining company in Perth - flying in recruits from New Zealand after Australians rejected $300,000 construction jobs.
