[Australia] Graduates struggling to find work after university

Australia’s latest graduates are speaking out about the difficulty of securing a post-graduation job when gaps between their education and skills required by employers become evident, HRD reports.

Tech startup CO-Architecture told HRD Australia that the challenge is particularly seen among architecture and design graduates with an average of 32 per cent - according to Australian labour market data - lacking employment opportunities.

In a press release, Kevin Mitchem - CO-architecture co-founder - said, "I have spoken to so many graduates and working professionals and they all agree that it's extremely difficult to secure a job after university because their studies do not align with what employers are looking for."

"Fundamentally, universities focus on theoretical knowledge and creative exploration, while employers want practical skills, technical know-how, and an understanding of real-world constraints like budgets and timelines. Graduates are crying out for applied learning experiences."

CO-Architecture reportedly said this gap would make graduates "ill-prepared" for the practical demands of their jobs, causing them to struggle with the transition from university to the workplace.

The startup's advice for employers was to "invest significantly in training new hires" to address the gap, which it said was likely to have an impact on productivity and financial resources.
