18 Aug 2020

On August 25,  President Volodymyr Zelensky gathered MPs for an extraordinary meeting and asked for their support of the draft law to increase the minimum wage, 112 UA reports.

A statement from the press service of the President's Office said, "The President appealed to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Dmytro Razumkov, with a request to hold an extraordinary session of parliament on August 25, after Ukraine's Independence Day, and urged MPs to support the presidential bill on increasing the minimum wage." Increasing the minimum wage to $180 is only the first stage. The program’s second stage, from 2021, will be an increase to $225. Stage three will take the minimum wage to $250 in 2021.

According to previous 112 UA reporting, Maksym Stepanov - the Minister of Health of Ukraine - believes that the current salary rate for doctors is unacceptable. The minister has gone on the record to say that doctors should be paid at least $700-800 per month.

"I believe that the minimum wage for a doctor should start from $700-800 - as long as we want to have professional doctors with decent working conditions - and then we will be able to demand that they treat us well," Minister Stepanov said. (Link and quote via original reporting)
