[UK] Significant rise in workers tipping off HMRC about underpaying bosses

In the UK, new data has revealed a significant rise in the number of workers reporting their employers for underpayments, Sky News reports.

Figures obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by TWM Solicitors showed that a total of 7,622 tip-offs about bosses failing to pay the national minimum wage were made to HMRC in 2025.

That was reportedly a 360 per cent increase on 2020/21, when just 1,656 reports were made

Whistleblower reports prompted HMRC to launch 1,137 investigations last year. It issued a total of 335 penalties, totalling £2.4m, as a result.

In 2024, it launched 911 complaint-led investigations and issued 332 penalties worth £1.7m.

Experts reportedly believe that more businesses will be flagged for underpaying staff after the minimum wage rose earlier this month.
