[UK] Primark introduces cost of living wage uplifts across all stores
11 Apr 2023

Primark has confirmed the rollout of a huge change across all of its UK stores this month to help with the cost of living crisis. The high street retailer has made the decision as thousands continue to struggle with the burden of massive monthly bills, Bristol Post reports.

All Primark floor workers will receive a wage hike in a move that will help 26,000 retail assistants in the UK, according to Manchester Evening News.

Some Primark workers will receive a larger increase than others, however, the wage hike will be rolled out across all stores in England, Wales and Scotland.

The average pay rise across the retailer will be 12 per cent; taking pay to £11 for staff across England, Scotland and Wales. The pay rise for staff based in London will rise to £11.51 an hour.

Workers will see the increase reflected in their April payslips. The new hourly rates were introduced for staff from April 1. It is the second pay rise Primark has given staff in the last two years; the chain also reportedly upped wages by 12 per cent in 2022.

In addition to the general wage uplift, Primark will be removing age-related pay rates for those under 23. This means all retail assistants, no matter whether they are 16 years or 50, will be paid the same wage for the work they do.

Prior to the change, Primark had paid their staff according to their age and in line with the UK Government's rates of pay with the National Living Wage being paid to those over 23 years and the minimum wage being paid to those under.
