Incomes Data Research (IDR) compiled the data. It reportedly said that an elf earning in the middle of the earnings range would be paid £12.48 this year. Their rate was £11.60 per hour for Christmas 2024.

Father Christmas’s pay does vary by venue, from extravagant events at castles and stately homes to retail outlets and garden centres. According to IDR, some were paid at the minimum wage of £12.21 while others could earn as much as £27.59 an hour at select venues.

IDR said that Dobbies, for example, paid £17 an hour for starter Santas’ "first time leaving the North Pole" and £20 for those with experience.

Across the nation, hundreds of tourist sites and retailers host Christmas events in December, often combining a visit to the big man with additional experiences such as Christmas markets, light shows and winter wonderland trails.

BBC News said further requirements for the Father Christmas role generally include enormous patience, an ability to improvise, and tolerance for repetition. Word from the grotto suggests that Hot Wheels, slime, Transformers and unicorns continue topping wish lists.

A strong constitution is another advantage, as flu season rages, though Father Christmas does typically benefit from being indoors and seated throughout.

Elves, however, are entrusted with raising festive spirits during the (often lengthy) queueing portion of the experience and are more likely to be on their feet for long periods, in fancy dress, and even posted outside the venue, setting a magical tone.
