[UK] New pay offer suspends Morrisons warehouse strikes
07 Jun 2024

In the UK,  a new pay offer has suspended planned strike action at two Morrisons warehouses, Retail Gazette reports.

From 23 to 26 May, around 1,000 employees at the supermarket giant’s warehouses in Gadbrook in Cheshire and Wakefield in West Yorkshire went on strike in a dispute over pensions and take-home pay.

According to Unite, warehouse staff were being forced to increase their own pension contributions while Morrisons reduced it by the same amount. The change would leave workers £500 a year worse off.

A further walk-out was scheduled between 13 and 16 June, however, it was called off by the union as a “goodwill gesture”, BBC reporting said.

The strike’s cancellation reportedly comes after Unite received a new pay offer from Morrisons. It is currently subject to ballot from members.

A Morrisons spokesperson told the BBC, “We are pleased that through open communication with Unite, we have together found a way forward – subject to the result of the ballot.”
