[UK] National minimum wage under increased HMRC scrutiny

Research from international law firm Pinsent Masons has revealed a steep increase in National Minimum Wage (NMW) investigations. Following controversial investigations into certain clothing manufacturers, HMRC has reportedly ramped up its scrutiny of pay and employment practices. The highest frequency of investigations occurred in Aberdeen, with 10.2 being conducted per 100,000 population in 2019.

The total number of NMW investigations jumped to 3,561 last year, increasing from 2,807 in 2018/19. Blackburn was the second most investigated area (9.8), followed by Birmingham (9.6), Belfast (9.1) and Leicester (nine). Pinsent Mason said HMRC usually uses its civil investigation powers to ensure that workers are repaid what is owed to them but more extreme measures are required in some cases.
