[UK] Low paid workers in South Yorkshire won’t survive tier 3 lockdown

Unions in Sheffield this week cautioned that low-paid workers in South Yorkshire will be unable to survive when the county begins its tier 3 COVID-19 lockdown from Saturday. Sheffield Trades Union Council (TUC) said the £41 million financial aid for South Yorkshire the government has offered would go to “business, not workers” creating an “unacceptable” situation. Minimum-wage workers in Sheffield and in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham will be forced to live on just 67 per cent of an already small income under the limitations of Rishi Sunak’s Job Support Scheme (JSS). The new JSS comes into force on Saturday. Sheffield TUC said the city was already regarded as the “low-wage capital” of Britain. Sheffield has more workers receiving minimum wage or employed on zero-hours contracts than in any other major urban centre. Morning Star Online reports on the stark warning.
