[UK] HMRC issues scam messages warning
03 Mar 2025

In the UK, HMRC has issued a warning against scammers who mimic messages to taxpayers and populate them with malicious links, Yahoo reports.

To safeguard against such scams, HMRC reiterated that it will "never ask for personal or financial information when we send text messages."

Its guidance for Child Benefit recipients states, "We advise you not to open any links or reply to a tax message claiming to be from HMRC that offers you a tax refund in exchange for personal or financial details."

Contact details are reportedly available online for anyone with a query about Self Assessment, tax credits, Child Benefit, Income Tax (including PAYE) and tax for employers (including employers’ PAYE) together with National Insurance, VAT and the Construction Industry Scheme.

In addition, those unsure about authenticity can check emails from HMRC that they suspect might not be genuine and any other taxes or HMRC services. Help with signing in and using HMRC online services, is also available for anyone who has lost their user ID, password or activation code.

The option to contact HMRC through an online form, webchat, phone or post will usually be available. Extra support for those whose health conditions or personal circumstances make contacting HMRC difficult will be offered.
