[Spain] Amazon 'Cyber Monday' strike partially called off after agreement reached
26 Nov 2023

A strike called at Amazon for November 27 - ‘Cyber Monday’ - and November 28 has been partially called off after an agreement with the company was reached, Morning Express reports.

An improvement in the salaries of workers considered by the Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) - Spain’s largest trade union federation - to be “insufficient” has yet to be made.

In a statement, CCOO announced that the agreement was reached on the morning of November 25, following 14 hours of negotiation at the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA).

It will reportedly only affect the work centres of Amazon Spain Fulfillment; the large logistics spaces.

The workers’ salaries were left out of the negotiation because “the company does not agree to negotiate them with the union representation” so “this issue remains unresolved and outside the commitment to social peace.”

CCOO has clarified that it continues to discuss this matter with Amazon management since “it does not give up on ensuring that salaries are adapted to the responsibilities and demands of the job.”

The agreement reportedly includes the implementation of “a new procedure for managing work accidents, which will be negotiated in the Health and Safety Committees of the different work centres” together with “a commitment to implement means and resources to improve support and response of the payroll management service”.

In addition, it includes a series of measures to “reduce payroll incidents” and “an extraordinary process to be able to resolve serious cases of payroll incidents with prompt payment within five working days,” according to CCOO.

The series of one-hour strikes per shift had been called by CCOO alone and were not supported by any of the other unions with representation within Amazon. The strike was the first nationwide action at Amazon Spain and some 20,000 workers were called.

Amazon reportedly had about 22,000 permanent workers in Spain, by the end of 2022, with the aim of raising the figure to 25,000 before the end of 2026, and around 40 facilities after opening new operations centres in places such as Zaragoza or Girona.
