[Netherlands] Record 100 million Tikkie transactions in 2023
10 Jan 2024

2023 was a record-breaking year for bill-splitting and money transfers in the Netherlands, ABN AMRO’s Tikkie has revealed. The payment request app had more than 150 million transactions on its platform in 2023, totalling more €6.6 billion, I Am Expat reports.

Figures released by Tikkie showed that the busiest day for transactions in 2023 was Black Friday when almost half a million Tikkie requests were made. The majority of Tikkies were made for items such as food, lunch or groceries.

The highest peaks in spending on the app were reportedly at the end of the month when salaries are commonly paid. The 150 million Tikkies made in 2023 is a significant leap from the 130 million made in 2022, a record in itself.

In addition to food bills and groceries, many people used Tikkie to reclaim their deposits on cans and bottles from Dutch supermarkets. According to data from the app, more than 2.1 million can and bottle deposits were collected and paid via the Tikkie service.

Tikkie is one of the Netherlands’ most popular transfer apps but other Dutch banks such as ING and Rabobank also reportedly offer their own service meaning the €6.6 billion transferred using Tikkie in 2023 was not the total of bills split in the country last year. Further billions could have moved through other money transfer apps.
