[Italy] Digital nomad visa options for 2024
08 Feb 2024

Italy is a popular destination for globally remote workers thanks to its comparatively low cost of living, affordable housing options and easy access to coworking spaces such as WeWork, Millepiani Coworking and Isola Catania. TechRound explores the process for obtaining permits to reside in the digital nomad hotspot.

Two visa options will be available in 2024 for foreign nationals looking to live and work in Italy.

For non-EU remote professionals, the self-employed visa - introduced in 2022 - reportedly facilitates relocation for individuals engaged in specialised work requiring specific skills or qualifications. Software developers, IT specialists and designers fall into this category. Successful applicants must meet the criteria of a “highly qualified” foreign national.

Self-employed visa requirements include a clean criminal record, valid health insurance, proof of accommodation and an annual gross income of at least €8,500. The application process is initially online and is followed by an appointment with an Italian Consulate or Embassy to submit the necessary documents.

At the end of its one-year validity recipients of this permit can reapply and may qualify for a permanent residence permit after five years.

The second option - Italy’s digital nomad programme - is reportedly set to launch this year. Qualifying specifics have yet to be confirmed but applicants are likely to need to meet minimum income requirements, hold valid health insurance and have a clean criminal record. Taxes are likely to apply upon relocation.
