[Hungary] Call for European minimum wage adjustment and reinstatement of teachers

Hungary’s Democratic Coalition (DK) has called for the European minimum wage to be set at either 60 per cent of the median wage or 50 per cent of the gross average wage, The Budapest Times reports.

At a January 23 press conference, Csaba Molnár - DK deputy leader - stated that the national minimum wage or the wage specified in the collective contract should never be lower than the European minimum wage.

Commenting on the teachers’ wage increase, he reportedly said that “tricks and misleading communication” about teachers’ wages had been used for a decade. 

Mr Molnár said that contrary to the announced 32-33 per cent increase, DK and professional organisations had agreed that teachers also carrying out research and senior teachers with higher qualifications would receive less than the 2023 inflation rate.

In addition, the deputy leader called for the reinstatement of teachers who had been fired “unlawfully’ in recent times and to maximise teachers’ classroom working hours to 22 hours per week.
