23 Feb 2023

The top spot in a recent quality of life ranking published by Numbeo has been secured by the Netherlands, despite tough competition from countries such as Denmark and Switzerland, I Am Expat reports.

International cost of living database Numbeo’s annual ranking provides “an estimation of overall quality of life” across the 84 countries included in the study.

The Quality of Life index considers a number of different factors, including:

  • Purchasing power
  • Pollution levels
  • How house prices compare to salaries
  • Cost of living
  • Safety levels
  • The healthcare system
  • Traffic levels and the average commute length
  • Climate/Weather

A country’s performance across each of these eight areas is reportedly used to determine its overall score.

European countries claimed eight out of the top 10 positions in the 2023 ranking, with the Netherlands claiming the number one position and Denmark and Switzerland rounding out the top three. While sitting in the bottom positions this year are Venezuela, Bangladesh and Nigeria.

The Netherlands takes the lead in international quality of life ranking

The Netherlands generally scores highly in these kinds of rankings, however, it is unusual for the country to beat its Scandinavian neighbours and take first place. This year, the Netherlands successfully rose through the ranks, swapping its third-place position in 2022 for the top spot in 2023.

The Netherlands achieved an overall score of 196,7 and reportedly performed particularly well in average commute times (7th place), purchasing power (8th place), and the healthcare system (10th place). The Netherlands, in fact, placed in the top 30 across all factors with its poorest score being for its weather (30th place).

Dutch cities also reportedly performed well in Numbeo's separate city ranking. The Hague and Eindhoven took the top two spots, and Rotterdam secured a place in the top 10 too. Cities included in the study were assessed across the same eight areas, and both The Hague and Eindhoven managed to achieve scores above the national average in almost all categories.
