[France] Unions and employers at odds over pensions
19 Jun 2025

In France, unions and employers are poised for critical talks on pension reform following the failure of previous negotiations. Unions are opposed to raising the retirement age, while employers are concerned about increased payroll contributions, Devdiscourse reports.

In the wake of the country’s controversial 2023 pension reform, unions and employers are preparing for crucial talks next week.

Prime Minister Francois Bayrou reportedly aims to secure backing from Socialists to withstand opposition challenges.

Initial talks concluded on June 17 without resolving disagreements, despite extensive discussions. A new 'final chance' meeting is now set for June 23. Patrick Martin - president of employer group Medef - expressed his reluctance to participate, saying that their input was not sought when revisiting the reform.

Labour Minister Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet stated that modest progress has been made. However, a comprehensive agreement is still distant.

Unions are reportedly resisting the increase in retirement age from 62 to 64, concerned that the move would burden payroll contributions. The Prime Minister is considering all reform options to ensure financial balance in the pension system by 2030
