[US] Tax filing and payment deadlines extended for Virginia residents and businesses hit by February floods

In the US, the IRS has announced that residents and business owners across Southwest and Southside Virginia impacted by February flooding and storms will now have until November 3 to file federal tax returns and make payments, Cardinal News reports.

Following the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, people who live or have a business in the folowing 36 localities are eligible to file under the new deadline: the city of Bristol and the counties of Amelia, Appomattox, Bedford, Bland, Botetourt, Buchanan, Buckingham, Campbell, Carroll, Charlotte, Craig, Cumberland, Dickenson, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Grayson, Halifax, Lee, Lunenburg, Montgomery, Nottoway, Page, Pittsylvania, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Pulaski, Rockingham, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and Wythe.

A news release from the IRS, reportedly said that the new deadline applies to individual income tax returns and payments normally due April 15, and to 2024 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts and to the estimated tax payments normally due April 15, June 16 and September 15.

In addition, affected businesses will have until November 3 to file quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due April 30, July 31 and October 31; calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns normally due March 17; calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due April 15; and calendar-year tax-exempt organisation returns normally due May 15.

According to the release, eligible taxpayers who receive a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS are advised to call the telephone number on the notice to have the agency abate the penalty.
