[US] Jobs and pay remain 'secure' at TikTok despite threat of ban
20 Jan 2025

In the US, the social media giant TikTok has reassured its 7,000 employees that their jobs, pay, and benefits remain secure despite an ongoing battle over its future in the nation, HR Grapevine reports.

With the legal deadline approaching, TikTok’s leadership said in an internal memo that employee wellbeing remains a priority. It appeared that the January 19 deadline would see TikTok either forced to sell its US operations or face a nationwide ban, stemming from a law passed in April targeting the app over security concerns.

However, although the Supreme Court upheld the ban there have been further developments over the weekend which suggest a more optimistic outlook.

A potential ban would primarily affect user access and functionality but TikTok’s memo clarified that it would not disrupt the employment status of its US workforce. Offices will reportedly remain operational, and employees’ compensation and benefits will be unaffected, according to the memo.

"I cannot emphasize enough that your well-being is a top priority and so most importantly, I want to reinforce that as employees in the US, your employment, pay, and benefits are secure, and our offices will remain open, even if this situation hasn’t been resolved before the January 19 deadline,” the memo read. "Our leadership team remains laser-focused on planning for various scenarios and continuing to plan the way forward."
