In the US, Google has made voluntary buyout offers to more than 25,000 employees in its platforms and devices division, HR Grapevine reports.
The tech giant claims the move is intended to ensure that its workforce remains "deeply committed" to the company's strategic goals.
Google reportedly confirmed the buyout programme on February 3 after the voluntary exit programme had been offered to US-based employees the previous week.
Affected staff were employed to work on key products such as Android, Chrome, Google Photos, and hardware lines including Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest. According to a statement from Google, the programme allows eligible employees to leave voluntarily with a severance package.
“There’s tremendous momentum on this team and with so much important work ahead, we want everyone to be deeply committed to our mission and focused on building great products, with speed and efficiency,” the statement read.
According to CNBC reporting, employees have until February 20 to apply for the buyout, with decisions expected by March 25.
It is not yet clear how many of the more than 25,000 staff members are eligible for the programme or what the specifics of the severance packages will be. Google reportedly failed to respond to requests for further comment.
