[US] Employees getting pay information from AI and social media

In the US, new research has revealed that employees are being misinformed about pay expectations since they source the information from generative AI and social media platforms, HRD reports.

A new report from Payscale polled 1,000 employees and 500 business leaders, including HR managers, with responsibility for compensation decision-making.

It found 70 per cent of employers have seen an increase in employees using generative AI, such as ChatGPT, when seeking salary information.

More than a third of employers said that because of this, employee expectations around pay are higher than ever before (38 per cent) and that employees are receiving conflicting information about their pay (35 per cent).

Other than generative AI, 72 per cent of employers also said there was an increase in employees negotiating salaries based on information they found online.

While 63 per cent said there has been an increase in employees making salary requests based on inaccurate or unverified data.

The findings were reflected in employees’ answers. Some said they found their salary information on social media (19 per cent), search engines (26 per cent), and similar job postings (36 per cent).

Ruth Thomas - chief compensation strategist at Payscale - said the report’s findings indicate that employees' means of educating themselves on their pay are expanding.

In a statement, Ms Thomas said, "Employees are still gaining knowledge from traditional sources like family and friends and industry salary guides, but AI and social media are driving up salary expectations without the verified data and role context needed to inform compensation."
