On September 4, Mexico's Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS) introduced the Labor Complaints and Accidents System (SIQAL), a digital platform for reporting labour violations and workplace accidents, Garrigues reports.
The new system serves as a direct communication channel between employees and labour authorities, as detailed in Bulletin 36/25, published by the Government of Mexico.
The platform reportedly allows individuals to anonymously report complaints about rights violations, poor working conditions, or accidents and streamlines authorities’ responses.
SIQAL is a significant advance in the modernisation of the country’s labour rights protections. It empowers employees to assert their rights more effectively and encourages employers to enhance compliance with Mexican labour laws.
The platform helps prevent workplace risks, address irregularities, and impose sanctions on non-compliant employers by facilitating quicker inspections and interventions.
Issues that can be reported through SIQAL reportedly include:
-
Violations of employees' rights or working conditions.
-
Lack of workplace training or instruction.
-
Failure to report accidents to the STPS or relevant institutions.
-
Conditions that endanger employees' physical integrity or health.
-
Non-compliance with individual or collective labour agreements.
Employee complaints will be anonymous, enabling labour authorities to initiate workplace inspections and even procedures to correct irregularities, prevent risks in the workplace, and impose sanctions on non-compliant employers.
Garrigues cautions employers that awareness and adherence to Mexican labour regulations are more critical than ever and states that proactive compliance both mitigates the risk of sanctions and fosters a safer, fairer, and more productive work environment.
