[Grenada] Historic decision to increase minimum wage
21 Dec 2023

Grenada will increase its minimum wage from January 1, 2024. The timely pay bump is the first minimum wage change since 2011, BNN Breaking reports.

The minimum wage rise will impact several job categories, including media workers. It is intended to improve living standards and contribute to eradicating poverty in the nation.

Labour Minister Claudette Joseph announced the move during the 2024 national budget debate. The decision was reportedly described as brave and historic. In addition to helping with poverty eradication it aims to build a resilient and stable labour market.

The new minimum wage will be no less than EC$1,200 per month or EC$60 per day.

Job categories

Some employees, such as store clerks, will receive a raise of up to 100 per cent, under the change; going from making EC$700 to EC$1,200. Media workers - including announcers and reporters - will earn EC$1,400 per month or EC$375 per week.

The new Minimum Wages Order will reportedly cover an expanded category of workers to include media workers, call centre workers, helpers on construction sites and sanitisation workers.

The Employment Act mandates that employers must post a notice to inform employees of the new wages. Failure to comply with the minimum wage order can result in fines or imprisonment.
