[Canada] Government introduces legislation to support Canadians and protect jobs

On July 21, Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau introduced into Parliament Bill C-20, an Act containing further COVID-19 response measures. Once Royal Assent is given, this legislation would help to refine the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) so it is more targeted, expand eligibility to the CEWS and increase help so a larger number of workers can return to their jobs as the country’s economy continues to reopen.

Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan has supported Canadians and protected their jobs during the pandemic and positioned them for a strong and safe economic restart. The CEWS protects jobs by helping businesses retain employees on the payroll and encouraging employers to rehire laid-off workers. An increasing number of Canadian employees have their jobs supported through the CEWS - about 3 million since its launch - and that number continues to grow.
