[Canada] Further job cuts at Statistics Canada
15 Jan 2026

In Canada, federal workers are learning more about planned job cuts across the public service after Statistics Canada told employees on January 12 that it will be eliminating 850 positions from the department over the next two years, CBC reports.

In 2025, the federal public service underwent a significant review, and in his first budget, Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to slash 16,000 jobs by 2028.

More information about the "workforce adjustments" is reportedly expected by the end of the week, an email to staff from Chief Statistician André Loranger stated. This will include notifying the first 100 Statistics Canada employees whose positions have been cut.

The department will send 3,274 "workforce adjustment notices" to employees whose services "may no longer be required," the email said, with the majority receiving notice before January 27.

Not everyone who receives notice will lose their job entirely; some workers could be moved to an alternate role.

In addition, 12 per cent of the agency's 99 executive positions will be cut.

In a statement to CBC, Statistics Canada said it "remains focused on serving Canadians and adapting to future needs as we move through this period of change."

Statistics Canada reportedly had 7,274 employees on its payroll as of March 31, 2025.

The government is offering early retirement incentives in an effort to mitigate the impact of job cuts.

Departments, including Shared Services Canada and Global Affairs Canada, are reportedly expected to release details about their own workforce adjustments in the coming days.
