[Americas] Amazon confirms the 16,000 job cuts leaked by email
30 Jan 2026

Amazon has confirmed that it will be cutting 16,000 jobs, just hours after it broke the news about a new round of global redundancies in an email which was seemingly sent by mistake, BBC News reports.

The email, seen by the BBC, was sent late on January 27. It references a number of employees in the US, Canada and Costa Rica having been laid off as part of an effort to "strengthen the company."

The message was apparently shared by mistake, as it was swiftly cancelled.

Early on January 28, Amazon reportedly announced the job cuts as part of a plan to "remove bureaucracy" at the company.

Beth Galetti - senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon - stated that the online retail giant was not planning to make "broad reductions every few months", citing Amazon's October announcement of 14,000 corporate job cuts.

"While many teams finalised their organisational changes in October, other teams did not complete that work until now," Ms Galetti said.

Amazon employs around 1.5 million people globally. Around 350,000 of whom have corporate roles. The company has yet to announce where the latest job losses will fall or which countries will be affected.
