In Kenya, issues in the education sector have come to a head with Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu telling the country’s media that teachers are facing a severe financial crisis due to the high cost of living, Opera News reports.
Mr Oyuu stated that the current salaries are not commensurate with the work that teachers do and, as a result, he has called for a salary increase for all teachers in addition to a review of other benefits such as housing allowances and medical cover.
"The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) stopped us from negotiating anything monetary in 2021. But since SRC has lifted the caveat on negotiation, we have written to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to bring us to the table so that we may review our current salaries," the Secretary General said.
Kenya’s teachers have reportedly been widely supportive of the move by Mr Oyuu on the basis that the workload they carry is considerable and outweighs the meagre salary they receive for carrying it out.
