[Egypt] No salaries for unvaccinated state employees
04 Oct 2021

Egyptian state employees who make the decision to not get the COVID-19 vaccine will no longer be allowed into their workplaces and they will cease to receive their salaries, Ahram Online reports.

Speaking on September 30, Egypt’s Cabinet spokesman Nader Saad said that these measures will come into effect after a date that is yet to be determined by the government.

In a televised statement to Al-Hayat TV Saad said, until the measures are imposed, unvaccinated public servants will be required to undergo a PCR test every week - and in some workplaces, twice a week - at their own expense.

Saad reportedly urged those who have not yet been inoculated to proceed with vaccination, saying that this is mandatory for public servants.

According to a document issued by the cabinet on September 26, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has ordered all ministers to issue a decree forbidding employees from entering government institutions unless they submit proof of vaccination or a PCR test every three days for those who refuse to receive the vaccine.

On 17 September health ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said that around 2.4 million out of the 3.4 million employees working at the state’s administrative apparatuses have been vaccinated.

According to the World Health Organization, as of 27 September 2021, a total of 16,223,309 vaccine doses had been administered in Egypt.

Egypt is currently experiencing the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The country recorded 741 new novel coronavirus cases on Thursday. This brings the total infection tally to an official figure of 304,524 since the outbreak began in February 2020, the health ministry said in its daily coronavirus update statement.
