[Egypt] Government will set private sector minimum wage

The Egyptian government has initiated the process to determine a minimum wage for private-sector employees and is scheduled to fix the value of the minimum wage and the new periodic bonus percentage before the end of May, Middle East Monitor reports.

Hala El-Said - Minister of Planning and Economic Development and President of the National Council for Wages - confirmed that during the first meeting of the council, following the restructuring under Court of Cassation decision No.2659 of 2020, she discussed reviewing the minimum wage. Ms El-Said reportedly made recommendations proposing a new minimum wage in cooperation with the Prices and Living Standards Committee, before presenting it to the National Council for Wages.

Additionally, she suggested the annual periodic bonus percentage that the private sector could consult in light of various economic indicators to guarantee a decent quality of life for citizens while complying with the economic conditions of the Egyptian state.

Ms El-Said explained that the newly-established committees have been assigned to study and present the discussed proposals to the council before the end of the month.
