[US] New York approved minimum wage goes into effect until 2026
09 May 2025

In the US, states including New York are taking proactive steps to address the nation’s stagnant minimum wage by setting higher minimum wage standards, MSN reports.

New York's recent decision to increase its minimum wage is part of a historic multi-year agreement between Governor Kathy Hochul and the State Legislature.

This initiative is reportedly intended to index the minimum wage to inflation, ensuring that wages rise along with the cost of living. By 2026, the minimum wage in New York City, Westchester County, and Long Island will climb to $17 per hour, and the rest of the state will reach an hourly rate of $16.

These increases will mean an additional $20 per week for full-time employees earning the minimum wage. In upstate New York, this adjustment equates to a weekly salary of $640, or approximately $33,000 annually. Governor Hochul stated that the increase aims to ease the inflationary burden on New Yorkers while allowing businesses time to adapt to the changes.

From 2027 onwards, New York's minimum wage will reportedly be adjusted based on a three-year moving average of the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers in the Northeast region. The approach, outlined by the state's Department of Labor, seeks to provide a more dynamic and responsive wage structure that reflects economic conditions.

The legislation does, however, include provisions to freeze wage increases if the state's economy weakens, therefore, these adjustments are not guaranteed. The safeguard is intended to balance the needs of workers with the economic realities faced by businesses and the wider economy.
