[US] First full paycheques due as federal work stoppage continues
20 Oct 2025

In the US, the government shutdown is now the third-longest federal work stoppage in the nation’s history. With no end in sight, a key set of federal workers are now scheduled to miss their first full paycheque of the cycle, Yahoo reports.

The government’s payroll calendar shows Friday October 17 is an electronic deposit deadline for the pay period from October 4-18.

The shutdown has already reportedly impacted other sectors, from farming to housing. The Trump administration has, however, made moves to pay selected government workers, including TSA agents and active-duty members of the military.

At the heart of the impasse is a fight over healthcare. Democrats want to continue enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which lower healthcare costs for Americans covered under those plans.

On October 19, President Trump once again said that his party's position was not to negotiate, at least before the shutdown ends, claiming that it is in fact Republicans that "want to have great healthcare."

Democrats are reportedly relying on another looming deadline - the beginning of the open enrollment period for health insurance on November 1 - to force Trump and other Republicans to the table finally.
