[UK] HMRC urges workers to check December payslips

In the UK, HMRC has urged workers to check their payslips carefully over the holiday season to ensure they are being paid at a rate which at least meets the minimum wage, CambridgeshireLive reports.

It reminded temporary seasonal staff and workers on short-term contracts that they are legally entitled to the same minimum pay rates as permanent employees.

All workers have been encouraged to check their hourly rate and be alert to other factors that could lead to underpayment. These might reportedly include unpaid working time like arriving early or staying late to open and close premises, cleaning, or taking part in mandatory training outside of working hours.

In addition, according to The Mirror, HMRC emphasised that if employers make deductions for items such as uniforms or equipment, causing an employee's pay to drop below the minimum wage, it is 'unacceptable' and must be reported.

HMRC said, "No employer is exempt from paying their workers the statutory minimum wage. It is illegal for your employer to pay you below the National Living Wage, so check your pay and talk to your manager to make sure you're getting the wages you are entitled to."
