Under reforms expected to be announced by the UK Chancellor in her upcoming budget, the government will regularly name and shame employers for breaches of national minimum wage rules, City AM reports.
According to a Treasury source, the expected changes will provide further protection to vulnerable workers and ensure businesses have no place to hide.
In addition, the reforms are reportedly intended to clear a backlog of cases.
The Treasury source said, “This government is cracking down on unscrupulous employers to protect the country’s lowest-paid workers and ensure fair pay for hard work.”
“We are sending a clear message – those who shortchange their staff will not be allowed to hide.”
Treasury figures showed that 500 employers failed to pay the minimum wage in October, impacting 42,000 workers.
These businesses received fines totalling £10.2m, and were required to fully reimburse affected employees.
