[Kenya] Treasury rules out further tax rises and calls for cuts
23 Dec 2025

In Kenya, the treasury cabinet secretary has ruled out further tax increases, including on PAYE, stating that such measures would “milk Kenyans dry”, Capital Business reports.

John Mbadi made the comments at an event in Nairobi, saying the government is considering reducing taxes instead.

“We cannot take more loans, that is the reality. We can’t tax you more. In fact, we should reduce taxes. That is what the government is thinking about,” Mr Mbadi said.

The cabinet secretary’s remarks reportedly come in the wake of ongoing economic pressures, including high unemployment, rising inflation, and constrained government spending.

There was a public backlash in 2024 following the government's introduction of the 1.5 per cent Affordable Housing Levy and increase of National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions to 6 per cent of employees’ monthly earnings, measures that further reduced take-home pay.
