It has been impossible to be online for more than five minutes this week without hearing how the current heatwave is affecting much of Europe. Across the continent and in the British Isles, people are struggling, productivity is down, and now soaring temperatures are having a tangible effect on payroll, too.
On the very day that research from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) confirmed the heatwave is indeed harming productivity, the cloud-based HCM and payroll solutions provider ADP released a product status update regarding a service disruption which was potentially preventing clients from accessing certain solutions.
Heatwaves can impact payroll just like any other core business function, or any other business at all, as they often lead to unauthorised time off, a demand or need for temporary changes to work patterns, including earlier/later starts or remote work and the proven reduction in labour productivity seen above.
Losing valuable team members at the wrong time in a pay cycle can have a hugely detrimental effect, and any additional tech issues only exacerbate problems and delays. ADP has yet to specify what its particular challenges were this week, but it is unlikely to be the only company putting out (hopefully metaphorical) fires.
Currently, ADP’s external ICP systems and SAP platforms are working well. The impact has been on Lyric, Celergo, Streamline, and GMV portals.
Its June 24 statement said, “This issue has been caused by extreme weather conditions, specifically unusually high heat impacting parts of our infrastructure. In response, we have activated our business continuity plans and are actively working to restore services as quickly and safely as possible."
By today (June 26), further progress had been made, and ADP shared the following updates at 8:05 AM and 10:15 AM EDT, respectively:
8:05 AM EDT: “We are seeing meaningful progress in restoring service. Many solutions are now back online, while others are taking longer than expected. Please know our teams are prioritizing this above all else and remain focused on restoring services as quickly and safely as possible.”
10:15 AM EDT: “We are making progress, with more services coming back online and performance continuing to stabilize across many areas. However, our technical teams are still addressing some issues.
"Restoring full service remains our top priority. Our next update will be by 1pm ET / 7pm CET.”
