In Kuwait, around 300 domestic workers - under Article 20 visas - transferred to the private sector in one 48-hour period following the implementation of a decision permitting such a change on July 14, Arab Times reports.

Demand among domestic workers to take advantage of this decision was high. It is set to remain in place for two months. The move is intended to boost access to the skills of workers already in Kuwait rather than hiring from abroad.

Estimates reportedly suggest that the decision to allow domestic workers to transfer to the private sector will support the revival of the private sector through the provision of workers needed for the completion of certain projects.

In a positive step for the country’s expats, the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) launched the national project ‘Together 4’ to protect the rights of expatriate workers. According to reporting from Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), PAM partnered with the Kuwaiti Society for Human Rights to make the project happen.

In a press conference, Dr Fahad Al-Murad - Acting Deputy Director General of the Labor Protection Sector at the Authority - announced that the Authority seeks to review all procedures to guarantee the rights of all expatriate workers in Kuwait.

Dr Al-Murad said the Authority will evaluate all aspects of the employment measures, from the recruitment stage and employment to the return of workers to their home countries.
