[Iraq] Teachers strike to demand their salary arrears
04 Feb 2025

On February 3 in Iraq, protests erupted in the city of Al-Sulaymaniyah with demonstrators calling for the resolution of salary-related issues and expressing solidarity with hunger strikers protesting deteriorating living conditions in the Kurdistan Region, Draw Media reports.

The striking teachers presented four demands:

1. Respect for human dignity in the Kurdistan Region and the rule of law
2. Localization of employee salaries at the federal banks
3. Respecting Kurdistan citizens through the distribution of their salaries every thirty days and returning their salary arrears
4. Starting the process of the Kurdistan Region employees' promotions and allowances.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has failed to pay 16 salaries in 2014-2024 and 44 salaries have reportedly been paid in arrears.

The total amount of salaries that the KRG now owes is 22 trillion and 580 billion dinars.
Striking teachers are also demanding the resumption of promotions that have been suspended since January 1, 2016, meaning each salaried employee has missed two promotions.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has reportedly announced that the monthly salaries of employees and pensioners total around one trillion dinars.
